Football Unites To Support the Homeless World
Cup
"This
is the third year that Manchester United has
worked with The Big Issue in the North on the
Homeless World Cup project and we are happy to
be involved again. The previous years' events
have shown that football is a powerful tool in
changing people's lives, and it's great that we
can play a part in that."
Sir
Alex Ferguson, Manager, Manchester United
"You love football. But how do you train if you
are homeless? How do you travel to compete if
you do not have a passport? Football is for
everyone. Get into the Homeless World Cup. I
do."

Rio
Ferdinand, Manchester United and England
"Exactly when chaos comes into our life, is when
we must never lose hope, we never must lose
faith in holy love and wisdom. If we have faith,
small that it is... one day... it goes to help
us to transform our life. My life is an example
of this! And one of the ways to show my
gratitude is to extend and to share, when I can,
my luck, with those who need it. Because I
believe that this way, we will be able to create
a happier, more just society. As my art is in my
feet and not in my hands, it is with much honor
that I associate the power of soccer to this
noble, social cause, in a year that marks
Portugal's participation for the second time in
the Homeless World Cup."
Luis Figo, Inter Milan & Portugal, FIFA Player
of the Year 2001
Those who do not have a home need our help,
support your national street soccer team. To
Spain: Maintain the excitement of victory for
the whole game because up until the last minute
there is always a chance of winning."
Luis Garcia, Liverpool & Spain, Champions League
Winner 2005
"To the players: Enjoy yourself. That is the
most important thing. Enjoy it from the
beginning to the end. Winning is not the most
important thing and if you lose, do it with your
head held high."
Fernando Torres, Atletico Madrid & Spain
"We are gonna score a goal for social inclusion!
We will give a
helping hand to the homeless. To the Spanish
team: Have a good time, enjoy yourself and know
that we are all supporting you."
Michel Salgado, Real Madrid & Spain, Two times
Champions League Winner
"We are gonna lend a hand to our other national
team. The best goal is your message. To the
goalkeepers: "Keep concentrating because its
possible that success can slip through your
hands and help and support the other players."
Iker Cassillas, Real Madrid & Spain
"I think it´s really good that the situation for
homeless people is brought up so that it can be
an eye opener for people in general and
particularly for politicians. And that it at the
same time generates money towards the cause."
Martin Dahlin, Former Sweden Player, 3rd in FIFA
World Cup 1994

"The
individuals situation in society is so important.
To show up at practice, to be punctual, and the
feeling of community in a team game makes it
easier to break a negative trend such as
addictions. And with physical activities you’ll
start to feel better."
Thomas Ravelli, Former Sweden Goalkeeper, 143
caps
"As the coach of the Austrian team I could
personally experience how the Homeless World Cup
has changed lives. Two thirds of the players of
the 2004 squad are much better off now than they
have been before. The Homeless World Cup project
is a perfect example how the process of social
reintegration can be inspired by football. I am
proud to be part of it."
Gilbert Prilasnig, Former Austria Player and
Champions League Star with Sturm Graz
"This is sport at its most powerful. True
passion, team spirit, grit and glory. The
Homeless World Cup is changing lives around the
world. Get into the Homeless World Cup and kick
off global poverty."
Ian Botham, Former England cricketer and Ashes
winner
"The Homeless World Cup is a wonderful event. In
the past, it has helped many people change their
lives. I fully support this tournament and I am
only sorry that I am unable to be in Edinburgh
to give it my full backing."
