streetfootballworld festival 06: Football, Art
and Culture
Football’s origins
are out on the street – and it’s gradually
re-conquering its original terrain.
streetfootballworld is organising the first
Streetfootball World Championship. All over the
world, from back yards to village pitches, as
yet undiscovered soccer talents are getting
ready – to be at their best for Germany in
summer 2006. Around 200 young players from 24
countries and regions are taking part in the
competition and on July 8 – just one day before
the professionals’ World Cup Final – the
streetfootballers will be walking onto the pitch
to celebrate their own grand finale. And
afterwards, they’ll be carrying straight on with
their preparations for the 2010 FIFA World Cup™
in South Africa.

We hope that you
already feel the vibes from Germany – with less
then 100 days until the World Cup, the fever has
started! The festival 06 preparations are well
underway and it is time to continue with news,
ideas, questions and answers regarding the
festival 06…
First, let us announce the great news: all 24
participating delegations for the festival 06
are defined! In a year-long process, the
streetfootballworld HQ and the
streetfootballworld Network Board were in
contact with potential participating network
partners, we had the chance to meet the majority
of you in order to get informed about your work
and we used this time to learn more about your
experiences, your vision and finally the great
energy of “development through football”.
The festival 06 will present to the world, for
the first time ever, best practice approaches
from “the other dimension of the game” coming
from five continents and working with more than
200.000 children and young people per year. 192
of these young people will be in Berlin at the
festival 06 – so let us continue preparing this
collective event with even more energy, in order
to ensure their well-being and a good
representation of your work.
Extra training sessions are scheduled for 24
teams from the streetfootballworld network: they
will be playing from July 2nd to 8th for the
title of World Champion of the Streets.
Booking flights, packing jerseys and squeezing
in extra training sessions: for 192 young street
footballers from the streetfootballworld network
the dream of the World Cup has become a reality.
The 24 participants of the “festival 06” are
qualified. For one week, teams from Europe,
Africa, North and South America, Asia and the
Middle East will play in Berlin for the World
Cup of the Streets.
Each team is travelling with eight street
footballers between the ages of 16 and 21, along
with two team managers. The matches will be
five-on-five in a street football stadium on the
Mariannenplatz in Kreuzberg, Berlin. For the
majority of the “festival 06” participants it
will be their first trip overseas – some have
never been out of their city. The travel costs
have been raised by the projects themselves. The
teams will be accommodated in a school close to
the festival site, marking the first time that
the world of street football is under one roof!
The teams come from projects in the
streetfootballworld network that use football to
promote peace and tolerance or combat violence,
drugs or racism. In some of the teams girls and
boys play together. In order to qualify for the
“festival 06”, the teams did not just have to
display skills on the ball. Those who want to be
a part of the festival have to be an active part
of the streetfootballworld network and use
football for social development in an exemplary
manner.
At the “festival 06” there is a lot more on
offer than just football. The teams will present
their own project activities on the festival
site: learn freestyle tricks, ball weaving with
plastic bags and how to dance the Murga, a South
American street dance. Photos shot by youngsters
from the projects will be displayed on the
stadium’s giant screen. Visitors can take a
culinary voyage through the world of football:
original snacks from the stadiums of the world
will be available on the festival site.

Shootback: Streetfootballers photograph their
world

In the run-up to the
streetfootballworld festival 06, street
footballers from the 24 participating social
football projects are photographing their world.
Each project has been provided with 10
disposable cameras to distribute among players
between the ages of 12 and 21. The players then
have the opportunity to photograph their lives
and their football: their neighborhood, family,
mates, their team, local pitch, ball and boots.
The ‘shootback’ photos will be displayed during
festival 06 on the giant screen in the
especially constructed street football stadium.
The streetfootballworld festival 06 will take
place in Kreuzberg, Berlin from 1 to 8 July. 24
teams from social football projects located
throughout the world are travelling to Germany
to compete in the first-ever street football
world championship. The tournament is not just
about playing football, however. It is about
street footballers displaying their football
culture to the world. Photography is an ideal
medium to do exactly that. The ‘shootback’
project provides the opportunity for street
footballers to photograph the role football
plays in their lives – the passion, comradeship
and hope for the future. At the same time, the
players are capturing their daily lives –
friends and family, the upsides and downturns.
To accompany the photos, the ‘shootback’
photographers have provided comments on football
and life, which will be superimposed onto the
photos to appear on the giant screen.
Once the ‘shootback’ photos arrive in Berlin
they will be incorporated into the festival 06
Visuals Programme by the video artist Jolyon
Greenaway. Greenaway has performed for a number
of football events and his work is characterised
by its fast-paced and energetic style. Each
team’s appearance in on the stadium’s pitch will
be accompanied by a video clip introducing their
project and a slide show of their ‘shootback’
images. Further clips will provide an
introduction to festival 06 and highlight the
various social activities of the participating
teams.
The ‘shootback’ photography project was inspired
by the streetfootballworld network member
Mathare Youth Sports Association (MYSA). Located
in Nairobi’s largest slum Mathare, MYSA began
the first-ever ‘shootback’ project in 1997 by
providing boys and girls with a camera to
photograph their daily lives. The project was a
massive success, providing participants with
vocational training and starkly portraying the
poverty, drug abuse, violence and spread of AIDS
in Mathare. The streetfootballworld festival 06
provides the perfect opportunity to widen the
‘shootback’ project to include street
footballers from around the world.
The project is being conducted with the
cooperation of the German Foreign Ministry,
which has have kindly supplied logistical
support in transporting the disposable cameras
to and from the 24 participating projects.

Schily and Klinsmann
present "streetfootballworld
festival 06"
Wednesday, June 1,
2005
Pelé and Diego
Maradona learnt to
play football in the
streets. Time will
tell whether a
worthy successor of
the two legends will
be playing at "streetfootballworld
festival 06" in
Berlin.
What we do know, however,
is that 24 teams from
all across the world
will be competing in the
streetfootball World Cup
at Mariannenplatz in
Kreuzberg, Berlin, from
1 to 8 July 2006.
The spectacular project,
part of the Federal
Government-funded arts
and culture programme
for FIFA World Cup 2006,
was presented in Berlin
on Saturday 28 May 2005
by Federal Minister of
the Interior Otto Schily
and trainer of the
German national football
team Jürgen Klinsmann (photo).
"We need to reach
children where they hang
about. Football keeps
them away from crime,
drugs and other problems.
They can tire themselves
out and relieve
aggression at their
local football areas",
said Klinsmann.
According to the Federal
Ministry of the
Interior, the 24 teams
of the "streetfootballworld
festival 06" have been
selected from projects
that use football as a
route to peace and
renunciation of violence
and as a cure for drugs,
poverty and Aids. "This
festival will be a very
special highlight of the
World Cup year 2006",
stressed Schily.
